By Marty Leonard (email)

Nov 25, 2007

Here is one player on each team that I have found on waivers.  Some people are guys that you should go out and get right away, while some you should watch what they do and when you think they are a good fit for your team go out and get them.

Andy McDonald Andy McDonald, Center
Anaheim Ducks
Anaheim Ducks
Andy McDonald has gotten off to a somewhat slow start.  He only has 11 points through the first 22 games.  He has averaged over 30 goals and 80 points the last two years.  There is no reason why he will not do this again.  If he is around go get him, or if someone dropped him, pick him up.
Tobias Enstrom
Tobias Enstrom, Defense
Atlanta Thrashers
Atlanta Thrashers
I think one of the hardest parts of fantasy hockey is finding that third or fourth defenseman that can give you points.  I think Enstrom is one of the players that can do that for you.  Atlanta scores a lot of goals, and they play in a division where everyone seems to be putting up a lot of points.
Peter Schaefer
Peter Schaefer, Left Wing
Boston Bruins
Boston Bruins
Schaefer came over to Boston in the offseason with a trade with the Ottawa Senators.  Schaefer is a journeyman who has put up consistent numbers throughout his career.  Lately he has been playing very well with a 2 goal, 3 point game.  If he continues to get his ice team, he might intrigue some people.
Ales Kotalik
Ales Kotalik, Right Wing
Buffalo Sabres
Buffalo Sabres
One team that the new NHL is made for is the Buffalo Sabres.  They have had great success because of the way that they play.  With both Chris Drury and Daniel Briere leaving this past season in free agency, you have to look at other players that might be able to step up their game a little bit, and Ales Kotalik may be the man to do so.
Owen Nolan
Owen Nolan, Right Wing
Calgary Flames
Calgary Flames
Yes, Owen Nolan is old, and yes he is still a good player.  Calgary has a very good team this year and should be going to the playoffs, which means they will need the most out or everyone and I think Owen Nolan a respected veteran will lead by example by playing solid down the stretch.
Jeff Hamilton
Jeff Hamilton, Center
Carolina Hurricanes
Carolina Hurricanes
As I said about Hamilton at the beginning of the year, he will score points this year on the Carolina’s first ranked power play.  Hamilton will continue to get the job down this year, and already has 15 points on the season.  Go out and get him.
Rene Bourque
Rene Bourque, Left Wing
Chicago Blackhawks
Chicago Blackhawks
Chicago has a lot of young players right now playing well.  Rene Bourque may join the likes of Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.  Bourque may be better known right now as son of the hall of fame defenseman Ray Bourque, but he is making his own name right now.  He should be someone that you should keep your eye on.
Tyler Arnason
Tyler Arnason, Center
Colorado Avalanche
Colorado Avalanche
The thing that I like the most about Arnason is that he is not afraid to shoot the puck.  Since he has found the back of the net only 3 times this year he hasn’t had the best luck, but if you don’t shoot you will not score.  Arnason will keep firing away and he should get some more goals as well as some assists as people chip home his rebounds.
Sergei Fedorov
Sergei Fedorov, Center
Columbus Blue Jackets
Columbus Blue Jackets
About ten years ago, Fedorov could have been the first pick in a fantasy draft.  Now that he is 36 and getting older, people tend to keep away from him. I would take a chance on Sergei. He still might be able to regain the touch that made him such a dominant player.
Niklas Hagman
Niklas Hagman, Left Wing
Dallas Stars
Dallas Stars
Don’t look now but this Finnish forward is near the top of the league in goals scored with 10, and not that many people have picked him up yet.  The pace that he is going he will get close to 40 goals, and picking someone off waivers that can do that will put your team over the top in your league.
Daniel Cleary
Dan Cleary, Left Wing
Detroit Red Wings
Detroit Red Wings
Last year Dan Cleary was able to put up 20 goals and 20 assists.  This season Cleary has put up a very consistent season again, so far with 7 goals and 7 assists.  Look for him to increase these numbers on a very good team and reach close to 30 in both categories by year end.
Raffi Torres
Raffi Torres, Left Wing
Edmonton Oilers
Edmonton Oilers
The former first round pick of the Islanders is up in Edmonton and he may start to make some noise.  Raffi is a physical
player who has contributed before, and has enough pride to make sure that he gets the job done again this year.
Jozef Stumpel
Jozef Stumpel, Center
Florida Panthers
Florida Panthers
One thing that Jozef Stumpel always has been able to do is put up points.  Stumpel once again is doing this for the Panthers this year.  He can set people up for goals which makes him very dangerous, because when the defense is going to play against him passing the puck, he can still beat you with a goal.
Jack Johnson
Jack Johnson, Defense
LA Kings
LA Kings
Jack Johnson is a huge defenseman and may be better then Erik Johnson who is on this list.  Fantasy defensemen are always hard to find and few do good.  JJ has tons of potential and you should pick him up.
Mark Parrish
Mark Parrish, Right Wing
Minnesota Wild
The former New York Islander is playing very well up in Minnesota.  He knows how to score and will continue to do so.  If Parrish is available in any leagues he should really be picked up.  Parrish has started to score and he may not stop scoring
Michael Ryder
Michael Ryder, Right Wing
Montreal Canadians
Montreal Canadians
Right now on the season Michael Ryder only has 3 goals which is unlike him.  He has at least 25 goals in every season so far in his career and has been the Habs leader in goals the past two years with 30.  If he is available pick him up, and don’t be afraid to use him because when he does come around it will be a steal.
Jordin Tootoo
Jordin Tootoo, Right Wing
Nashville Predators
Nashville Predators
Jordin Tootoo is a very physical player, and when you play hard the puck seems to bounce your way.  Tootoo will not score many pretty goals, but he will bang in rebounds and deflect shots.  Tootoo may also pick up a couple of penalty minutes to if your league gives you points for minutes, then you will want to pick up #22 Jordin Tootoo.
Travis Zajac
Travis Zajac, Center
New Jersey Devils
New Jersey Devils
Now I could have easily put a veteran like John Madden here, but I think I found someone on his team that will put up even better numbers then him and that is Travis Zajec.  Zajec is a former first round pick and it appears that he is finally catching up to the game.  Look for Zajec to be making a lot of big plays for the rest of the year.
Josef Vasicek
Josef Vasicek, Center
New York Islanders
New York Islanders
Big Joe Vasicek is starting to play some decent hockey as of lately.  He is getting it done on both sides of the ice, which should lead to more time on the ice.  He seems to have adopted to playing in New York very well and he should be watched in all leagues, because when he does score, he does it in bunches.
Marc Staal
Marc Staal, Defense
New York Rangers
New York Rangers
Marc Staal is in his first season with the New York Rangers and unlike his older brother Eric and younger brother Jordan, Marc is a defenseman.  Just knowing that he comes from that family tells me that this kid may have a knack for putting the puck in the net, and he has to be a great skater as well if he kept up with his brothers.
Mike Fisher
Mike Fisher, Center
Ottawa Senators
Ottawa Senators
If Mike Fisher is available in your league, stop reading this right now and go pick him up.  Fisher has been playing terrific so far this season on the best team in the league.  He can set up and he can finish.  Fisher is everything that you want in a player on your team.
Jeff Carter
Jeff Carter, Center
Philadelphia Flyers
Philadelphia Flyers
Jeff Carter is on a very good Philadelphia team that is on the verge of becoming a major player again in the NHL.  Carter is a big physical center that is coming into his game.  He is a playmaker and has plenty of weapons on both sides of him.  Look for him to continue the good season that he is having.
Niko Kapanen
Niko Kapanen, Center
Phoenix Coyotes
Phoenix Coyotes
It is hard to pick a player on the Phoenix Coyotes because in my opinion they have the worst offense in the league.  So if I have to pick one guy that I think might have some fantasy potential this season, it would have to be Niko Kapanen.  Niko hasn’t really ever done anything special, but on this bad of a team someone has to step up and Niko might be the one.
Jordan Staal
Jordan Staal, Center
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Penguins
Here is a 19 year old in his second season, and he hasn’t been producing. Is it a second year slump? I don’t think so and I still would grab him, he had 29 goals last year and there is no reason why Jordan can’t do it again.  He has tons of potential around him on his team that he should break out sooner or later.
Jonathan Cheechoo
Jonathan Cheechoo, Right Wing
San Jose Sharks
San Jose Sharks
I was looking at some fantasy league sites and saw that Cheechoo has been dropped.  If that is the case in your league, you would be stupid for not grabbing him.  He had the most goals in the league two years ago, and with Joe Thornton on his line he should finish in the top ten this year.
Erik Johnson
Erik Johnson, Defense
St. Louis Blues
St. Louis Blues
The former number 1 overall pick is one of maybe about 4 St. Louis Blues that you should have on your team.  He should start to pick up more assists as the season continues and he gets used to the NHL style of play as well as a couple goals here and there.
Jan Hlavac
Jan Hlavac, Left Wing
Tampa Bay Lightning
Tampa Bay Lightning
As I stated before the Southeast division doesn’t have the strongest goalies in their conference.  So Jan Hlavac should be a safe pickup if you need him.  He is a proven player that has scored numerous goals throughout his NHL career.
Alexander Steen
Alexander Steen, Center
Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto Maple Leafs
Alex Steen is starting to score some goals, and for a player that has averaged 40 points over the last two seasons.  I’m thinking that this might be the season where Alex Steen lives up to his billing and breaks out.  Steen can score and when you can do that you are very dangerous.
Ryan Kesler
Ryan Kesler, Center
Vancouver Canucks
Vancouver Canucks
Ryan Kessler is a very exciting player.  If he is able to stay healthy this year there is no telling what kind of numbers that he can put up.  You should keep an eye on Ryan Kessler and when he starts to explode, make sure that you grab him.
Viktor Kozlov
Viktor Kozlov, Left Wing
Washington Capitals
Washington Capitals
The good news about Viktor Kozlov, is he is third on the Capitals in scoring.  The bad news, he only has 13 points.  He did have a very productive night when they played Ottawa when he scored 3 points.  He is a veteran so expect solid numbers from now to the end of the year.
